U.S. Embassy Statement on Landmark Paris Climate Agreement

New Delhi — The world made a huge step towards addressing global warming yesterday with the signing of the Paris agreement to combat climate change. Representatives of 195 countries have agreed on a way forward, and for the first time, we have an ambitious, durable climate regime that sends a powerful signal that all countries are committed to take real action on climate change. This is a great day for us, but more so for our grandchildren and their children, who will inherit the earth from us.

The U.S., Indian, and global leaders deserve our congratulations for forging a final agreement. It includes a collective goal of keeping temperature rise to well below 2 degrees and also includes a strong focus on mobilizing public and private climate finance.  As President Obama has noted, “Full implementation of this agreement will help delay or avoid some of the worst consequences of climate change,” and the U.S. looks forward to working closely with India to implement this breakthrough agreement.
