Mumbai – The U.S. Consulate General Mumbai and the Ohio State University will co-host a Waste Management Innovation Conference in Mumbai April 17-18 to exchange creative ideas and identify innovative technologies for effective management of waste that can accelerate India’s economic growth.
U.S. Consul General Tom Vajda will open the conference, which aims to build collaborative networks among individuals and organizations in the United States, India, and the region that address waste management issues and to assist them in exploring ways to build upon conventional and new waste management concepts.
In previewing the upcoming conference, Consul General Vajda said, “In India and the United States, it’s a critically important challenge for cities and governments to manage waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The conference we’ve organized will provide a platform to explore American and global best practices and find inventive solutions to address local needs.”
“India faces daunting challenges due to escalating municipal and industrial waste driven by urbanization, population increase, and economic growth,” added Joseph Fiksel, executive director for sustainable & resilient economy at the Ohio State University. “This conference represents an opportunity to stimulate innovation in the field of waste management so that India can continue to grow in a sustainable manner.”
The consulate expects more than 300 representatives from government agencies, universities, industry, agriculture, non-governmental organizations, and small businesses to participate in the conference.
Breakout sessions during the conference will focus on topics such as best practices in municipal operations, innovations in waste avoidance and elimination, and perspectives of waste management entrepreneurs and government policymakers.
