Security Alert for U.S. Citizens, August 5, 2019

Location: Jammu and Kashmir, India

Event: U.S. citizens currently in Jammu and Kashmir are strongly advised to leave as soon as possible and to exercise great caution until they depart. The Government of India has advised tourists and Amarnath Yatra pilgrims to leave Kashmir immediately due to security threats.  Communications to the region, including by phone, text, and e-mail, may be unreliable at this time.

The Embassy refers U.S. citizens to its current Country Specific Information urging U.S. citizens not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir (with the exception of visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh) because of the potential for terrorist incidents, as well as violent public unrest.

U.S. citizens traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs website, where the current Worldwide CautionTravel WarningsTravel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.  The U.S. Embassy also encourages U.S. citizens to review the “Traveler’s Checklist,” which includes valuable security information for those living and traveling abroad.

Follow us on Twitter and the Bureau of Consular Affairs page on Facebook as well.  In addition to information on the internet, travelers may obtain the latest information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or outside the United States and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.  These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).
