Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Heavy Rains and Flooding in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry

The city of Chennai and surrounding areas in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as well as the adjacent Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry), have experienced very heavy rains in recent weeks resulting in localized flooding, which has been severe in some areas. The rains have lessened in recent days, but parts of Chennai and surrounding areas remain flooded, and significant transportation and infrastructure challenges persist. The power supply has been restored in some areas, but remains inconsistent, and cellular coverage is also unreliable in many places. The Chennai International Airport has reopened for some flights, though not all carriers have restored service. Travelers should consult airlines for updated information on airport operations and status of flights.

The U.S. Consulate General in Chennai will reopen for all services on Tuesday, December 8. U.S. citizens remaining in flood-affected areas are reminded that during flooding and its immediate aftermath, there is an elevated risk from many water-borne diseases and those transmitted by mosquitoes.
