Robert Burgess arrived as U.S. Consul General in Chennai in August 2017. He is responsible for promoting U.S.-India relations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
He previously held diplomatic positions related to South and Central Asia at the State Department in Washington and served overseas as Deputy Chief of Mission in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, as well as at posts in Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Malawi, and Pakistan.
A native of Illinois, Mr. Burgess studied history at Colorado College, law at the University of California, and business at the University of Texas. He is a 2012 graduate of the U.S. National War College.
After backpacking around the world for a year, he decided to give up the practice of law and join the diplomatic corps – a decision he has never regretted.
