Location:  Thoothukudi, and throughout Tamil Nadu, India

Event:  Local media report that protests against the expansion of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi became violent on May 22, with fatalities reported and vehicles set on fire.  Demonstrations are ongoing and may have the potential again to turn violent.  Shops and businesses may be closed on May 24, 2018.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid areas with demonstrations and civil disturbances.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Do not draw attention to yourself.
