Chennai, April 9: The American Center at the U.S. Consulate General, Chennai is celebrating National Library Week with book readings, talks, film screenings, and a book sale April 8-12, 2019. Throughout the week the American Center will provide a 50 percent discount on its annual membership fee. On April 12, the library will place on sale hundreds of books on history, culture, literature, social science, and management at discounted prices.
Consul for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Lauren Lovelace remarked, “Every April, the United States celebrates National Library Week to highlight the valuable role our libraries play in transforming lives, educating minds, and strengthening communities. Since 1947, the American Center Chennai (formerly known as the American Library) has welcomed patrons across generations to enjoy our collection, share their ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding between the United States and India.”
The American Center includes more than 16,000 books, magazines, movies, video kiosks, and computer terminals. It boasts one of the largest collections of American studies materials and literature in South Asia.
The American Center also hosts a wide range of interactive programs, including English language workshops, U.S. higher education presentations, and cultural and political talks. Thousands of South Indians have converged in the American Center to exchange views, conduct research, and be inspired!

Entry Requirements: Please bring an original, valid, government-issued photo ID cards (e.g. passport/driver’s license/voters id card/pan card/aadhaar card/college/university ID card) for entry. Cellphones must be deposited at the security counter of the Consulate. (Other electronic devices will not be allowed including iPads/Notebooks/Laptops, etc.). Please note that there is no car or two wheeler parking facility at the Consulate premises.
